Dr. Steven Engel, Dean

Dr. Steven Engel has been the Director of the Honors College at Georgia Southern since 2005. He is also an Associate Professor of Political Science and has been a member of that department at Georgia Southern since 1999. He is on the editorial board of the journal, Honors in Practice, has authored several articles and book chapters on honors education and covering topics in political science, and in 2018 was named a Fellow of the National Collegiate Honors Council.

Dr. Jonathan Roberts, Associate Director and Armstrong Campus Lead

Dr. Roberts was the previous Honors Program director at Armstrong State University from 2006-2017 and joined the Georgia Southern team in 2017. He is a Professor of Psychology who began his career at Armstrong in 2001. Dr. Roberts specializes in developmental cognitive neuroscience and also teaches courses in Cross Cultural Development and Sensation and Perception. He is a proud father, husband, and also engages in automobile racing and instruction.

Dr. Francis Desiderio, Associate Director

Dr. Desiderio has been at Georgia Southern since 2009. He earned his Ph.D. from the Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts at Emory University where his research interests were in American studies and urban studies. He has an M.A. from the Department of Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University, and his undergraduate degree is in English from the University of Detroit. He works with every aspect of the College with particular attention to honors first-year seminars, experiential learning, service-learning, and nationally competitive scholarships.

Erin Martin, Academic Advising Coordinator

Erin Martin serves as the Honors Advisor and has been with the Honors College since Fall 2012. She earned her M.Ed. in Professional Counseling from The University of Georgia in 2009 and her B.A. in Psychology from The University of Tennessee in 2007. Erin works as a supplemental advisor to honors students by collaborating to assess their academic path while enrolled at GS as well as working with students to plan beyond their undergraduate career.

Sarah McHugh, Honors Advisor

Sarah McHugh joined the Honors team in Summer 2018. Sarah earned her Master of Public Health from Indiana University in 2018 and a Bachelor of Arts in Health Promotion from the University of Northern Iowa in 2016, where she was an honors student and a Division I student-athlete. As a supplemental advisor, Sarah helps students complete their Honors requirements and think about life beyond their undergraduate careers.

Sue Guadagno, Senior Administrative Assistant

Sue Guadagno joined the Honors College as the Senior Administrative Assistant in January 2016. She has been with Georgia Southern since December of 2006, starting as an accounting assistant in the Bursar’s Office where she worked for six years before joining the Department of Foreign Language as the administrative secretary for 3 years. She is a big sports fan and enjoys watching football, basketball, and softball games.
