How to Apply as an Incoming Freshman
Students will have two paths to join the Honors College as an incoming first-year student for the fall 2022 semester:
1) Admittance to the College based on the freshman index in their Georgia Southern application, or
2) Admittance to the Honors College via a holistic review process for students who wish to join but do not meet the freshman index threshold.
All students who wish to be considered for admission to the Honors College for the fall 2022 semester must be admitted to Georgia Southern University by February 1, 2022. All students will also be able to apply for Honors College scholarships.
Two Paths to Join
Selection via the Freshman Index
Incoming freshmen who apply and are admitted before February 1, 2022, and who meet the freshman index of 3200 or higher, will be offered admission to the Honors College.
This index is a combination of high school GPA and standardized test scores. Georgia Southern will use the following formulas to determine a student’s freshman index:
SAT Freshman Index = (500 x HS GPA) + [1.06 x (SAT Evidence based reading and writing + SAT math)] – 74
ACT Freshman Index = (500 x HS GPA) + (42 x ACT Composite) + 88
This GPA is based on the Required High School Curriculum and is unweighted. This is NOT the final high school GPA listed on a student’s transcript or their HOPE GPA. A student’s Georgia Southern Calculated High School GPA can be found on the Admissions Status Check Page.
Students can find the most current test scores Georgia Southern has on file on the Admissions Status Check Page.
Students who are admitted to the Honors College may also be awarded small scholarships from Georgia Southern. All students admitted based on the freshman index are encouraged to apply for additional Honors College-specific scholarships via the My Scholarships application.
Selection via Holistic Review
Students interested in joining the Honors College who do not meet the freshman index threshold are still encouraged to apply for admittance. The Honors College application is found within the My Scholarships application. The deadline for this application is February 1, 2022.
In these cases, we take a holistic review of the application that includes the academic record, application essays, student activities and engagement, and rigor of curriculum. Students who apply to the Honors College via the application will also be considered for scholarships.
Students admitted to the College in previous years typically earned higher than a 3.7 high school GPA. In our review process, admission is competitive as we have many more strong applicants than available spaces in the College.
Note: If a student does not meet the freshman index threshold on their application, but later submits updated higher test scores or an updated transcript that raises their GPA, then they may be eligible for admittance to the Honors College. Updated transcripts and scores will be considered provided they are in by the February 1, 2022 deadline.
The Honors College Application on My Scholarships
Please keep in mind that the Honors College application is for students who are not admitted based on the freshman index AND for students accepted based on the freshman index who wish to be considered for Honors College scholarships.
To apply for admission to the Honors College and to be considered for the College’s scholarships, students must first submit an Application for Admission. Approximately 48 hours after submitting an online admissions application, students will be able to access the My Scholarships application through their Admission Status Check Page.
Honors College Scholarships
Incoming freshmen to the Honors College who complete the My Scholarships application will be considered for scholarships. The Honors College will review applications and select candidates to participate in an interview. Out of that pool of interviewees, the Honors College will select who receives awards.
Approximately 20% of Honors College students have scholarships awarded by the College, but many more have scholarships awarded by other entities on campus.
The Honors College offers scholarships to incoming freshmen at two different levels:
The 1906 Scholarship
A full tuition scholarship for up to eight semesters.
The Honors College Scholarship
Scholarship awards of $1000 per year for up to 8 semesters.
Both the 1906 Scholarship and the Honors College Scholarships can be added to the HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship to help cover other costs of attending the university.
Recipients retain their awards as long as they remain in good standing with the Honors College.
