Incoming Freshmen

How to Apply as an Incoming Freshman

To apply for admission to the Honors College as an incoming freshman, students must complete the Scholarships and Honors College tab on the Georgia Southern University Application for Admission.  On that form, you will be asked to share information about your extra-curricular involvement as well as work experience, write a brief essay, and identify the number of AP, IB, or dual enrollment courses you have taken. (The essay prompt is: In an autobiographical sketch, please describe your career goals and plans for the future. Please include reasoning for your interest in a particular major and/or profession as well why you are considering/decided to attend Georgia Southern University.)

You must answer “Yes” to the question about your interest in applying to the Honors College for us to review your application. On this form, you will also have the opportunity to apply for the Honors Global Scholars or Honors Savannah Scholars, two special cohort programs for incoming freshmen, which require additional essays.

We encourage students to complete this form while completing the Application for Admission but it is possible to complete the rest of the application and, at a later date, complete a separate Scholarships and Honors College application (with the same questions).  Instructions are on the form.

All students who wish to be considered for admission to the Honors College for the fall 2023 semester must be admitted to Georgia Southern University and complete the Scholarships and Honors College application by May 1, 2023. All applicants to the Honors College who apply by and are admitted by the priority deadline of February 1, 2023 will also be considered for Honors College scholarships.

Admission Requirements for Freshman Applicants

The Honors College seeks scholars interested in research, change agents interested in engaging local and global communities, and individuals seeking to explore their curiosity and express their creativity.  Participation in the Honors College is not a reward for past achievement; rather, we examine past achievement to better understand the potential in the individual applicant.

Essays, grades, and a record of seeking challenges and taking on responsibilities help us better understand the whole person behind the application. There are no minimum grades or test scores required to apply but admission is competitive as we have many more strong applicants than available spaces in the College.

The Honors College offers opportunities on both the Statesboro and Armstrong campuses, and this application is for students who wish to participate in the College on either campus and compete for its scholarships.

Honors College Scholarships

Incoming freshmen to the Honors College who complete the Scholarships and Honors College application and are admitted to Georgia Southern University by February 1, 2023 will be considered for Honors College scholarships. The Honors College will review applications and select candidates to participate in interviews. Out of that pool of interviewees, the Honors College will select who receives awards.

Approximately 20% of Honors College students have scholarships awarded by the College, but many more have scholarships awarded by other entities on campus.

The Honors College offers the following scholarships to select incoming freshmen:

The 1906 Scholarship

A full tuition scholarship for up to eight semesters.

The Honors College Scholarship

Scholarship awards of half-tuition for up to 8 semesters.

Honors Global Scholars

In addition to participation in the opportunities in the Honors Global Scholars program, students will receive a $2,000 annual scholarship for up to 8 semesters.

Honors Savannah Scholars

In addition to participation in the opportunities in the Honors Savannah Scholars program, students will receive a $2,000 annual scholarship for up to 8 semesters.

All Honors College Scholarships can be added to the HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship (and other scholarships) to help cover other costs of attending the university.

Recipients retain their honors scholarships as long as they remain in good standing with the Honors College.
