How to Apply as an Incoming Freshman

To apply for admission to the Honors College and to be considered for the College’s scholarships, students must first submit an Application for Admission. Approximately 48 hours after submitting an online admissions application, students will be able to access the My Scholarships application through their Admission Status Check Page.

To apply to the Honors College, please complete the My Scholarships application, including the Honors College essay and the request for a reference. Please check this guide for step-by-step directions.

Admission Requirements for Freshman Applicants

The Honors College seeks scholars interested in research, change agents interested in engaging local and global communities, and individuals seeking to explore their curiosity and express their creativity.  Participation in the Honors College is not a reward for past achievement; rather, we examine past achievement to better understand the potential in the individual applicant.

Essays, grade point averages, a reference from a teacher, and a record of seeking challenges and taking on responsibilities help us better understand the whole person behind the application. We will not consider SAT or ACT scores when we make decisions for fall 2021 incoming class.

Students admitted to the College in previous years typically earned higher than a 3.5 high school GPA; however, a student’s GPA does not solely determine an acceptance or bar entry into Honors.  Admission is competitive as we have many more strong applicants than available spaces in the College.

The Honors College offers opportunities on both the Statesboro and Armstrong campuses, and this application is for students who wish to participate in the College on either campus and compete for its scholarships.

Incoming freshmen to the Honors College are considered for scholarships. Approximately 20% of Honors College students have scholarships awarded by the college, but many more have scholarships awarded by other entities on campus.  To receive an Honors College scholarship as an incoming freshman, a student must also interview.

The Honors College offers scholarships at three award tiers: $10,000/year, $5,000/year, and $1,500/year.

Each award is a four-year (eight semesters) award, and recipients retain their award as long as they remain in good standing with the Honors College.

Application Deadline

There is one deadline for admission into the Honors College and consideration of scholarships.

Application Deadline is February 1, 2021.  Students who apply by this deadline will be considered for admission to the Honors College and its various scholarships.

Invitations for scholarship interviews will be sent by the Honors College after the February 1 deadline, and interviews will take place mid to late February. We will contact those selected to interview via email.

All decisions will be made in early March and all applicants will be notified of decisions by mid-March. This includes Honors College scholarship recipients, those admitted to the Honors College without one of our scholarships, and those who we would like to apply as a current student once they are at Georgia Southern .
