Careers and Community: A Conversation with Sandy Smith Gillis – Tuesday, October 19 at 7:00 pm

Sandy Smith Gillis was a member of the Bell Honors Program during her years at Georgia Southern, and she graduated with a degree in Communications. While at Georgia Southern, she played tennis all four years and was captain during her senior year. After graduation in 1989, she joined The Island Packet newspaper and media company which covers Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, and the surrounding areas. At The Island Packet, she wore a number of hats – outside sales, special sections/niche product manager, sales manager, then finally VP of Advertising. She remained in that role until 2017, and in 2018 became the Executive Director for the Deep Well Project on Hilton Head Island, an organization on whose board she had served since 2013. The Deep Well Project began in 1973 to provide safe, clean water to residents on the Island, and now it serves the Hilton Head community through emergency assistance with livable housing, food, children’s programs and much more.


The Many Paths from Honors – A Conversation with Thomas Eisenhart, Ph.D. – Thursday, September 23 at 7:00 pm (on Zoom)

Thomas Eisenhart graduated from Georgia Southern in 2010 with a degree in chemistry. Upon graduation, he travelled on a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship to Northern Ireland where he earned a Master’s degree in Clean Chemical Technology at Queen’s University Belfast. He followed up that degree with earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon completing his Ph.D., he left academia to join a management consulting firm, Boston Consulting Group, where he helps large organizations solve their most challenging strategic issues.


Dr. Varsha Jain – Thursday, August 19 at 8:00 am

This week the Parker College of Business Honors Lecture Series welcomes Dr. Varsha Jain, professor in Integrated Marketing Communications and Co-Chair of the Doctoral Program at MICA in India. Her research covers a variety of marketing, digital media, and branding topics, and she has published widely in journals like Journal of Consumer Behavior, European Journal of Marketing, and the Journal of Marketing Communications, among others. Dr. Jain’s talk, “Utilizing Social Media to Develop Your Personal Brand,” will take place Thursday, August 19, 8:00-9:00 am and will focus on:

  • how to utilize a social media to network;
  • how to more effectively utilize Linkedln to help you enhance your personal brand;
  • how other social media channels can help complement what you do on Linkedln in establishing your personal brand; and
  • what pitfalls to avoid in using social media
