The history of this trip stretches back over 10 years. Each spring break a team of students from Georgia Southern volunteers to work with Camp Blue Skies as they take over Camp Twin Lakes. Camp Blue Skies ( is a camp for adults with developmental disabilities, enhancing their lives through recreation, socialization and life skills education, and Camp Twin Lakes ( is a place for year-round, fully-accessible, and intentionally designed camp programs that teach campers to overcome obstacles while creating shared experiences.

A Virtual Camp for 2021

This Honors Alternative Break trip will take place virtually in Zoom sessions hosted by Camp Blue Skies. Participants will be led by Camp Blue Skies staff, Mr. Richard Sesler, founder and director of Camp Blue Skies, and Dr. Francis Desiderio, associate director of the Honors College. The Zoom sessions for camp will be held during Georgia Southern’s Spring Break and take place in one-hour evening sessions (7:00 pm – 8:00 pm) starting Friday, March 12 and running through Monday, March 15.

The full Virtual Camp Blue Skies format details are forthcoming, but do expect to have some time before and after each evening camp session for preparation and follow-up. Also, there will be several mandatory pre-camp training sessions that will take place in February and March. These will be run by Camp Blue Skies staff and Dr. Desiderio. Students who volunteer for this experience must attend all training meetings.

There is no fee associated with this trip.

Please note: We are seeking a variety of students across majors and years as well as a good mix of new students and returners. Previous experience on this trip or with adults with developmental disabilities is not necessary. And previous experience on the trip is not a guarantee of selection this year.
