Nationally Competitive Scholarships Advising
The Honors College is committed to helping students make the move from student to scholar and will advise any Georgia Southern student in their pursuit of nationally competitive fellowships and scholarships.
There is value in the process of developing an application. Every student who embarks on this task will examine themselves, take stock of what they know, and plan for their future. It is a process that helps prepare an application, and it is a process that helps prepare the individual getting ready for the next step after college.
In the past several years, over 60 Georgia Southern University students have received recognition from various prestigious programs. The majority of scholarship winners have received U.S. Department of State awards such as the U.S. Student Fulbright Grant, Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship, Critical Language Scholarship, and Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Other students have received the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship (and honorable mentions), the Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship, the Boren Scholarship, the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, and the Fund for Education Abroad. One student received three awards in three consecutive summers from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). One student received Honorable Mention from the Udall Scholarship. Several students have also won Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Scholarships.
The Honors College is the central office on campus for all students applying for any nationally and internationally competitive scholarship. Honors College staff will discuss these opportunities in classes, with student groups and organizations, and in individual meetings. Honors College staff also will work with students as they prepare application materials, arrange for campus committee interviews as needed, and facilitate campus recommendations (if required).
Many fellowships and scholarships require that applicants be nominated by participating institutions. These nominations come through the Honors College, though a student need not be in the program to be nominated. Students requiring nomination must adhere to the campus deadlines to be considered. Also, students applying for fellowships and scholarships where no nomination is needed but who request support from the program must also adhere to the deadline. (Some fellowships and scholarships do not require a campus nomination and students may apply directly, if they so choose.) Campus deadlines are designed to help students prepare the best application possible.
